Chapter 1 - The Broken Boy

The screwdriver slipped from Peter Calder’s sweating hand and clattered across the wooden porch.

He had been trying to fix the loose hinge on his front door for almost an entire hour.

The job should have taken ten minutes, but his mind kept drifting to painful memories.

He thought about his older brother, Aaron, who used to sit on this exact porch drinking root beer.

Aaron had passed away three years ago from a sudden, unexplained heart attack at thirty-five.

He left behind his grieving wife, Reena, and two beautiful children named Drew and Lily.

Peter had tried his best to stay involved in the children's lives after the terrible funeral.

However, Reena always had a convenient excuse to keep him far away from their house.

She claimed the kids were sick, sleeping, or simply too emotional to see their uncle.

Peter had foolishly believed she was just a grieving widow trying to maintain a stable routine.

As Peter reached for his fallen tool, a soft, agonizing scraping sound caught his immediate attention.

It was a slow, deliberate noise that sounded entirely wrong on a peaceful Saturday morning.

Peter turned around, and the horrifying sight made the breath leave his lungs in a rush.

His six-year-old nephew, Drew, was violently crawling up the concrete steps of the porch.

The little boy was covered in dark bruises, pale sweat, and thick layers of street grime.

Drew dragged his right leg behind him at a sickening angle that made Peter’s stomach lurch.

Clinging fiercely to the collar of Drew’s torn shirt was his three-year-old sister, Lily.

The toddler was nothing but skin and bones, her hollow cheeks highlighting her severe starvation.

Peter rushed forward and caught Drew just before the exhausted boy collapsed onto the hard wood.

He demanded to know what had happened to them, his voice shaking with absolute terror.

Drew looked up with red-rimmed eyes and whispered that Reena had locked them downstairs again.

The boy explained that he had to drag himself across seven blocks because Lily was starving.

Peter scooped both fragile children into his strong arms and carried them quickly into the living room.

He wrapped them in warm fleece blankets and handed Lily a small package of saltine crackers.

Drew patted his sister's back gently, murmuring for her to eat slowly so she would not get sick.

It broke Peter's heart to see a six-year-old acting like a veteran survivor of a war zone.

Peter pulled out his cell phone and immediately dialed 911 to request police and medical assistance.

He explained the horrific situation to the emergency operator while keeping a protective hand on Drew's shoulder.

The paramedics arrived in under three minutes, rushing through the front door with heavy medical kits.

While the medics stabilized Drew's shattered leg, the little boy pulled Peter close by the shirt collar.

Drew whispered that Peter needed to know the terrible secret about Reena's dark punishment room.

The boy stated that the punishment room was exactly where Reena had hidden the strange liquid she poured into Daddy's coffee on the morning he died.
