Chapter 3 - The Broken Basement

Peter drove his truck recklessly through the winding suburban streets toward his late brother’s house.

His knuckles were completely white from gripping the steering wheel with such intense, desperate fury.

He parked two blocks away from the property to ensure his vehicle would remain undetected by nosy neighbors.

He moved quickly through the overgrown backyard, grateful that Reena was currently occupied at the hospital.

The back patio door was locked tight, but Peter used a heavy garden rock to smash the glass pane.

He reached through the jagged hole, unlocked the deadbolt, and stepped into the silent, suffocating house.

The main floor looked perfectly normal, presenting a pristine illusion of a happy, well-maintained family home.

Peter knew the horrific truth was buried beneath the polished hardwood floors and expensive area rugs.

He found the heavy wooden door leading to the basement hidden at the end of a dark, narrow hallway.

The door was secured by three massive, heavy-duty padlocks that looked entirely out of place in a residential home.

Peter rushed to the garage, grabbed a heavy steel crowbar from Aaron’s old workbench, and returned to the hallway.

He swung the crowbar with explosive strength, shattering the metal brackets holding the locks in place.

The basement door swung open, releasing a terrible, foul odor of mildew, urine, and absolute despair.

He clicked on his flashlight and descended the wooden stairs, his heart pounding violently against his ribs.

The basement was a literal dungeon, stripped of all furniture except for a filthy mattress thrown on the concrete floor.

A small plastic bucket sat in the corner, serving as the only bathroom facility for the imprisoned children.

Deep scratch marks gouged the back of the wooden door, indicating how desperately Drew had tried to escape.

Peter felt hot tears of absolute fury sting his eyes as he witnessed the torture chamber his nephew had endured.

He pushed deeper into the dark room, searching for the hidden evidence Drew had mentioned at the house.

Behind a loose sheet of drywall, Peter noticed a small, concealed cavity carved directly into the foundation.

He reached his trembling hand inside the dark hole and pulled out a heavy, locked metal cash box.

He used the sharp end of the crowbar to pry the metal lid open, snapping the cheap lock instantly.

Inside the box was a stack of life insurance policies, each one taken out on Aaron just weeks before his death.

Beneath the documents sat a small, unlabeled glass vial containing a thick, cloudy chemical substance.

This was the exact poison Reena had used to simulate a fatal heart attack in her unsuspecting husband.

Peter quickly stuffed the vial and the insurance papers into his jacket pocket, finally holding the weapon to destroy her.

He turned around to leave the basement, planning to take this undeniable evidence directly to the FBI.

Suddenly, the heavy floorboards above his head creaked under the weight of someone walking through the kitchen.

Peter froze in the darkness, realizing that Reena must have returned from the hospital much earlier than expected.

A deep, unfamiliar male voice echoed down the basement stairwell, asking Reena if the kids were finally dead.

Peter gripped the heavy steel crowbar, realizing he was trapped underground with a pair of ruthless killers.
