Chapter 4 - The Corrupt Badge

Peter pressed his back tightly against the cold concrete wall of the basement, barely daring to breathe.

He listened intently as the heavy footsteps moved slowly across the kitchen floor directly above him.

Reena’s sharp, cruel voice filtered down through the wooden ceiling planks with absolute, chilling clarity.

She angrily told the mystery man that Peter had caused a massive scene at the hospital emergency room.

The man laughed deeply, assuring Reena that his connections at the police precinct would keep her perfectly safe.

Peter realized with creeping horror that Reena’s accomplice was actively working inside local law enforcement.

This explained exactly how she had managed to obtain an emergency restraining order so unbelievably fast.

Reena loudly complained that they needed to silence Peter permanently before he could talk to anyone else.

The man agreed, stating that he would frame Peter for a violent home invasion and shoot him in self-defense.

Peter gripped the steel crowbar tighter, knowing a direct confrontation with an armed police officer was suicide.

He looked frantically around the dim basement for any alternative escape route to avoid the stairs.

He spotted a small, narrow ventilation window located near the ceiling on the far side of the foundation wall.

Peter silently crept across the filthy concrete floor, praying the loose debris would not crunch beneath his boots.

He climbed onto an old wooden crate and desperately pushed against the rusted latch of the basement window.

The metal shrieked loudly in the quiet house, causing the voices in the kitchen above to instantly stop.

Heavy, aggressive footsteps began pounding rapidly toward the basement door at the end of the hallway.

Peter shoved the window open, squeezed his broad shoulders through the tight gap, and dragged himself outside.

He tumbled into the overgrown bushes just as the basement lights violently flickered on beneath him.

He scrambled to his feet and sprinted across the neighboring lawns, his lungs burning with pure adrenaline.

He reached his truck, threw himself into the driver’s seat, and sped away before the corrupt cop could spot him.

Peter knew he could not trust the local police department with the vial of poison and the insurance documents.

He decided to drive straight to the state police headquarters located three towns over to bypass the local corruption.

As he merged onto the main highway, his cell phone began buzzing relentlessly on the passenger seat.

The caller ID displayed the main number for the local hospital where Drew and Lily were being treated.

Peter answered the call quickly, praying the nurses were contacting him to provide an update on the children.

Instead, Reena’s sickeningly sweet voice echoed through the vehicle's Bluetooth speaker system.

She taunted him, revealing that her police boyfriend had just intimidated the hospital staff into releasing the children.

Reena casually mentioned that she had checked Drew and Lily out of the pediatric ward against strict medical advice.

She warned Peter that if he ever went to the authorities, she would ensure the children suffered a tragic accident.

She demanded that Peter bring whatever he stole from her basement to the abandoned lumber mill at midnight.

Before Peter could even process her horrifying ultimatum, the blaring sirens of three police cruisers appeared in his rearview mirror.
