Chapter 7 - The Breakthrough

Sarah gasped in complete shock, begging me to give the explosive back before Greg irreparably hurt Emma.
I ignored her frantic protests, carefully examining the broken detonator in the dim, terrible light of the closet.
I firmly told my sister that absolutely nobody else was going to die today.
I noticed a small, plastic panel on the explosive's casing that housed a high-voltage lithium battery.
I used a sharp, broken piece of metal from my damaged watch strap to pry the battery completely out of the cylinder.
I crept quietly toward the heavy iron door and located the exposed wiring of the electronic keypad lock on the inside wall.
I told Sarah to cover her ears and close her eyes as tightly as she possibly could.
I jammed the live lithium battery directly into the exposed, frayed wires of the magnetic locking mechanism.
A massive shower of bright blue sparks erupted, followed instantly by a loud, electronic sizzling noise.
The heavy magnetic lock loudly disengaged with a click, allowing the iron door to swing open slightly into the hallway.
I helped Sarah to her feet, wrapping her arm securely around my shoulder to support her failing weight.
We slowly pushed the door open, stepping out cautiously into the main room of the silent cabin.
The guards were nowhere to be seen, likely outside patrolling the dark perimeter of the surrounding woods.
We sneaked toward the basement stairs, following the muffled, terrifying sound of Emma crying below us.
I pushed the heavy basement door open and found a makeshift, highly sterile laboratory hidden beneath the rotting cabin.
Emma was strapped tightly to a cold metal examination table, her small face pale with absolute terror.
A man wearing a blue surgical mask and latex gloves was holding a sharp, gleaming scalpel right over her shoulder.

He turned around to face us, and my blood ran completely cold in my veins.
It was the exact same kind-hearted emergency room doctor who had run away from us at the hospital.
