Chapter 2 - The Escape

The heavy click of the lock echoed violently in the small, sterile examination room.

I rushed to the door and rattled the handle with all my strength, but it completely refused to budge.

Pure panic surged through my veins as I realized the doctor had intentionally locked us inside.

Emma started crying softly, asking me why the nice doctor had run away in such a hurry.

I knelt down on the floor and pulled both terrified girls into my arms, desperately trying to keep my voice steady.

I lied and told them we were just playing a fun game of hide and seek, but my own hands were shaking violently.

I looked at the blinking red light beneath Lily's skin, and a sickening wave of nausea washed over my entire body.

It looked like a piece of advanced military technology, not any standard medical treatment I had ever seen.

Through the narrow glass window in the heavy door, I saw two large men in dark tactical suits approaching rapidly down the hallway.

They absolutely did not look like hospital security guards.

They moved with a cold, calculated precision that terrified me to my core.

I knew I had to get the girls out of this room before those men reached our door.

I grabbed a heavy metal oxygen tank resting in the corner of the examination room.

I firmly told Emma and Lily to cover their ears and close their eyes as tightly as they could.

With a massive surge of adrenaline, I swung the heavy tank directly at the narrow glass window.

The reinforced glass shattered instantly, raining sharp, jagged fragments onto the linoleum floor.

I carefully reached my arm through the jagged hole, ignoring the glass cutting my skin, and twisted the deadbolt from the outside.

We pushed the door open and sprinted frantically down the opposite end of the long, bright corridor.

Loud security alarms began to blare overhead, flashing bright red lights across the sterile white hospital walls.

I dragged the girls through a set of heavy emergency exit doors and burst out into the blazing afternoon sunlight.

We ran across the crowded hospital parking lot until we finally reached my parked SUV.

I unlocked the doors and frantically shoved the crying girls safely into the back seat.

I threw myself into the driver's seat and locked all the doors, finally letting out a ragged, exhausting breath.

I genuinely thought we were finally safe.

Then, the cold, metal barrel of a loaded gun pressed firmly against the back of my neck.

May you like

A trembling, familiar voice whispered from the darkness of the back seat.

My sister Sarah told me to drive the car right now, or she would be forced to shoot me.
