Chapter 5 - The Laboratory

Greg blew out the match, plunging the cabin back into terrifying, suffocating darkness for a brief second.
He casually flipped a switch on the wooden wall, illuminating the room with harsh, battery-powered industrial floodlights.
Two large guards stepped out of the shadows immediately and aimed their automatic weapons directly at my chest.
I pulled Emma and Lily firmly behind me, trying desperately to shield them from the monster who was supposed to be family.
Greg walked slowly toward us, his expensive designer suit looking completely ridiculous and out of place in the rotting cabin.
He looked at Lily with the cold, calculating eyes of a businessman inspecting a piece of stolen, valuable property.
I angrily asked him how he could possibly torture his own innocent daughter for financial gain.
Greg laughed softly, explaining that Lily was not just his daughter, but a billion-dollar pharmaceutical miracle waiting to happen.
Her blood possessed a unique genetic anomaly highly capable of curing aggressive, terminal cellular diseases.
The device embedded in her shoulder was continuously extracting her rare stem cells while keeping her completely sedated.
I noticed how terribly pale Lily looked, her small body trembling violently from severe exhaustion and continuous blood loss.
Greg sighed deeply and said Lily was unfortunately becoming far too weak to sustain the aggressive, daily extraction process.
He desperately needed a fresh, genetically similar subject to continue his highly lucrative, illegal research.
He slowly turned his cold, predatory gaze toward my wildly trembling daughter.
He lunged forward, grabbed Emma by the arm, and violently yanked her away from me.
I screamed loudly and lunged forward to save her, but one of the guards struck me hard across the face with his heavy rifle.

I fell hard to the wooden floor, tasting hot, metallic blood pooling in my mouth.
Greg smiled down at me and said Emma was going to be the absolute perfect replacement.
