Chapter 5 - The Discovery

I pressed myself into the deep shadows beside the heavy oak wardrobe.
Madison stumbled into the cabin, holding a glass of wine and giggling into her cell phone.
She complained to her friend that the party was boring and she needed more cash.
I held my breath, gripping a small tactical flashlight in my hand.
If she turned on the main cabin lights, my disguise would not save me from being recognized.
Fortunately, she simply grabbed a designer handbag from the bed and walked right back out.
I exhaled slowly, my heart racing as I returned to the hidden safe.
The digital cracker finally beeped, and the heavy metal door swung open.
I reached inside and pulled out the original forged loan documents with Jake’s fake signature.
I also found a black leather ledger hidden beneath the paperwork.
I opened the ledger and shined my small flashlight onto the handwritten pages.
My stomach churned as I read the detailed entries.
My parents were not just borrowing money from dangerous people.
They were actively laundering money for a notorious international cartel through Madison’s fake charities.
This was no longer just a case of family greed and identity theft.
My family was entangled in massive, highly illegal organized crime.
I took out my phone and photographed every single page of the ledger.
I placed the original forged loan documents into a waterproof pouch hidden beneath my dress.
I carefully closed the safe and locked it, leaving the ledger behind so they would not suspect a breach.
I slipped out of the cabin and blended back into the noisy crowd on the deck.
I walked down the gangway and climbed into the back of my waiting security vehicle.

I handed the pouch to my attorney, telling him we now had enough evidence to destroy them.
His phone suddenly rang with an urgent, terrifying alert.
