Chapter 2 - The Ultimate Betrayal

I grabbed my crutches and rushed out of the law office as fast as my injured leg allowed.

My private surgery was scheduled for the next morning, but I could not leave Jake out on the streets.

I called him a cab and told him to meet me at a quiet diner near my apartment.

When he arrived, he looked completely shattered.

He dropped a small duffel bag onto the floor and slid into the booth across from me.

Jake explained that our parents had suddenly demanded rent for his small room in the basement.

When he told them he had given his last eight hundred dollars to me, my father exploded in a rage.

Our parents threw his clothes onto the lawn and told him he was a failure.

They did not even care that he had sold Grandpa’s antique tools to save his sister.

I reached across the table and held his shaking hands.

I promised him that he would never have to worry about a roof over his head again.

I did not tell him about the lottery ticket yet.

I needed to protect him from the dangerous crossfire that was about to erupt.

The next morning, I went into the private surgical clinic in Beverly Hills.

The billionaire-tier surgeons repaired my knee using advanced procedures the military clinic could never offer.

When I woke up in a luxurious recovery suite, my attorney was sitting in the corner chair.

He handed me a glass of water and a thick manila folder.

The surgery was a complete success, and I would walk normally again within weeks.

But the good news ended exactly there.

The attorney revealed that my parents had taken out a second illegal loan.

They had forged Jake’s signature to borrow half a million dollars from a very dangerous private syndicate.
