Chapter 5 - The Broken Glass

Madison did not hesitate for a single second.
She sprinted up the wooden staircase and disappeared into the hallway.
I heard the heavy bathroom door slam shut, followed by the metallic click of the lock.
I ran to the front door and secured the deadbolt, sliding the security chain into place.
I grabbed my cell phone from the kitchen counter and immediately dialed 911.
The emergency dispatcher answered quickly, asking for my exact location.
Before I could even speak my address, a deafening crash echoed from the front of the house.
Kevin had mercilessly smashed his wooden baseball bat right through my large living room window.
Shards of glass exploded across the carpet, sparkling under the dim porch light.
Kevin climbed through the broken window frame, breathing heavily like a wild animal.
His eyes were completely bloodshot, and he gripped the bat tightly with both hands.
"Give me the recorder, Sarah!" he screamed, spit flying from his mouth.
"The police are already on the line, Kevin!" I yelled back, holding up my phone.
Kevin sneered and took a menacing step forward into the hallway.
"By the time the cops get here, I will have the recorder and you will have a broken jaw," he threatened.
He raised the wooden bat high above his shoulder, preparing to swing at me.
I braced myself, refusing to back down and leave the children unprotected upstairs.
Suddenly, a massive shadow loomed behind Kevin in the broken window frame.
A heavy cast-iron frying pan swung rapidly through the air.
It connected with the back of Kevin's head with a sickening, hollow thud.
Kevin's eyes rolled back, and he collapsed forward onto the carpet like a dropped stone.
Standing in the window frame, completely soaked by the rain and breathing heavily, was Chloe.
She climbed inside carefully, stepping over her unconscious husband's body.
She dropped the heavy frying pan onto the floor, her hands shaking violently.

"Nobody threatens my daughter," Chloe whispered, her voice fierce and unwavering.
Sirens suddenly began wailing loudly in the distance, quickly approaching my street.
