Chapter 4 - The Audio Confession

I quickly wrapped Madison in a warm, fluffy towel and guided her to the kitchen table.
I made her a cup of hot cocoa, trying to stop her violent shivering.
Madison placed the small, black digital recorder onto the marble kitchen island.
"I am so sorry I ruined the cake, Aunt Sarah," she cried softly.
"Dad told me that if I did it, he would buy me the newest laptop for school," she confessed.
I squeezed her shoulder gently, realizing she had been heavily manipulated by her own father.
I pressed the glowing green play button on the small device.
The scratchy audio of a moving car filled the quiet kitchen.
Kevin's voice echoed loudly, sounding incredibly arrogant and cruel.
"The idiot actually left her filing cabinet unlocked during the party," Kevin bragged on the recording.
Arthur's gruff voice replied, praising Kevin for successfully stealing the signature template.
"I already paid the crooked notary down at the bank five thousand dollars to stamp the forged mandate," Arthur admitted clearly.
Kevin laughed, adding that Sarah would go bankrupt fighting them in court while Noah lived in Arthur's house.
I paused the recording, my hands shaking with a mixture of overwhelming relief and pure rage.
This little device held enough hard evidence to send both of them to federal prison.
Madison looked down at her mug, tears silently dripping onto her lap.
"I do not want to go back to my dad ever again," she whispered in a broken voice.
I promised her she could stay with us for as long as she needed.
Just as I stood up to lock the back door, my cell phone began to ring loudly.
It was Chloe, calling for the second time that night.
I answered the phone, fully expecting her to ask if Madison had arrived safely.
Instead, Chloe was screaming hysterically into the receiver.
"Kevin just came back to the house looking for Madison's backpack!" Chloe shrieked.
"He realized the recorder was missing and he is completely out of his mind!" she yelled.
I heard the sound of glass shattering in the background of the call.
"He took his baseball bat and he is driving to your house right now!" Chloe warned before the line went dead.

I dropped my phone onto the counter and looked at Madison in sheer panic.
"Go upstairs and lock yourself in the bathroom with Noah right now," I ordered her.
