Chapter 1 - The Canceled Privilege

The birthday candles had just been lit when my eight-year-old son, Noah, closed his eyes to make a wish.
Before he could blow them out, my twelve-year-old niece, Madison, sprinted across the backyard carrying a bucket of muddy water.
With a wicked grin, she dumped it straight onto the beautiful birthday cake.
Mud splashed violently across the colorful frosting, the white table linen, and Noah's new shirt.
The surrounding children gasped in pure shock.
My son stood completely frozen in place.
Then he burst into uncontrollable tears.
Madison laughed so hard she nearly fell over onto the grass.
"Oops!" she mocked loudly.
"Guess your stupid wish is ruined!" she added with a smirk.
I stared across the patio at my father, fully expecting him to discipline her.
Instead, the old man just chuckled into his drink.
"Kids will be kids, Sarah," he said dismissively.
My younger brother, Kevin, who is Madison's father, casually wrapped an arm around her shoulders.
"Relax," Kevin said with a roll of his eyes.
"It is just a cake, so do not be so dramatic," he told me.
I looked down at Noah, who was desperately trying to wipe mud off the birthday candles with shaking hands.
He looked up at me and whispered, "Mom, did I do something wrong?"
That innocent question completely shattered my heart.
"No, sweetheart," I said while hugging him tightly against my chest.
"You did absolutely nothing wrong," I reassured him.
Kevin scoffed loudly and crossed his arms.
"You are raising him to be way too soft," my brother criticized.
My dad nodded in firm agreement.
"If he cries over a little cake, the real world is going to destroy him," my father warned.
The birthday party ended early in a cloud of thick awkwardness.
Several parents quietly apologized to me before quickly taking their children home.
That night, after Noah finally fell asleep from sheer exhaustion, I opened my laptop in the dark kitchen.
For years, I had been generously paying for Madison's summer Disney trips, elite tennis camps, and expensive enrichment programs.
Kevin constantly claimed he could never afford them on his meager salary.
I logged into every single billing account associated with my niece.
One by one, I canceled them all.
Confirmation emails of the cancellations filled my inbox within a matter of minutes.
I did not send Kevin a single text message or warning.
I simply closed my laptop and went to sleep.
The next morning, my phone exploded with dozens of angry calls from Kevin that I completely ignored.
An hour later, my sister-in-law, Chloe, sent me a frantic text message.
"You need to see Madison right now," the text read.
Attached to the message was a screenshot from their home security camera.
Madison was standing in their kitchen, staring down at her brand-new iPhone in total shock.
The phone slipped from her trembling hand and crashed onto the hardwood floor.
She had just read one specific email.
And whatever that email said had wiped the arrogant smile completely off her face.
Chloe sent a follow-up text a second later.
"The cancellation email included a forwarded thread where Kevin begged the travel agent to downgrade Madison to a cheap motel," Chloe wrote.
"He told the agent to secretly deposit the four thousand dollar difference directly into his personal checking account," she explained.

My blood ran cold as I read the final sentence of Chloe's text.
"But Sarah, the worst part is that the account he used for the refund belongs to his secret mistress."
