Chapter 5 - The Dark Staircase
The flickering candlelight cast terrifying, dancing shadows across Diane's twisted face.
She slowly began walking up the grand staircase, gripping the heavy butcher knife tightly in her hand.
"You ruined my son's perfect life," Diane hissed, her voice dripping with pure venom.
Margaret gently pushed Olivia behind her, using her own body as a human shield.
"Your son ruined his own life by becoming a monster," Margaret replied firmly.
Olivia cried out as another brutal contraction forced her to her knees in the dark hallway.
She knew the baby was coming far too early, and they needed emergency medical attention immediately.
Diane reached the top of the stairs, raising the sharp knife with absolute, murderous intent.
She lunged directly at Margaret, aiming for her chest with a desperate, wild swing.
Margaret effortlessly sidestepped the clumsy attack, grabbing Diane's wrist with terrifying precision.
She twisted the older woman's arm sharply, forcing her to drop the deadly weapon onto the carpet.
Margaret delivered a swift, powerful strike to Diane's jaw, instantly knocking her completely unconscious.
Diane collapsed heavily onto the floor, the candle rolling away and extinguishing itself against the wall.
"Come on, Olivia, the garage is just down the hall," Margaret whispered urgently.
She hauled her daughter back onto her feet, half-carrying her down the back servant's staircase.
They reached the massive, multi-car garage, breathing heavily in the damp, cold air.
Margaret found the keys to Ethan's heavy military-grade SUV hanging on the wall.
She helped Olivia into the passenger seat, reclining it fully to ease the intense pain of her labor.
Margaret climbed into the driver's seat and hit the button to open the heavy garage door.
The electric motor groaned, but the door refused to move a single inch.
Ethan had manually severed the power cables to trap them inside the dark garage.
Margaret cursed under her breath, realizing they were completely boxed in.
