Chapter 4 - The Escape

The sound of the slamming door echoed like a thunderclap in the tense room.
Margaret had regained consciousness just long enough to kick the door shut and lock it from the inside.
She stood up slowly, wiping a trail of dark blood from her eye.
"You are incredibly stupid, Major Brooks," Margaret said with a fierce, bloody grin.
Ethan charged at the door, pulling the handle frantically, but the heavy deadbolt held firm.
He turned around and aimed his gun at Margaret once again.
"Unlock it right now!" Ethan screamed, losing all of his military composure.
Margaret simply crossed her arms, completely ignoring his frantic threats.
Olivia let out another agonizing scream as a second, much stronger contraction hit her.
Her water broke, soaking the blue blankets beneath her in a massive rush of warm fluid.
"Mom, it hurts so much," Olivia sobbed, feeling a terrifying pressure building in her pelvis.
Margaret rushed to her daughter's side, completely turning her back on the armed man.
"Hold on, sweetheart, I am going to get you out of here," Margaret promised gently.
Ethan realized that shooting them would only guarantee his immediate imprisonment for double homicide.
He needed to escape the estate and access his hidden offshore accounts before the federal warrants were issued.
He fired a single shot into the glass window, shattering it completely into the rainy night.
He climbed out onto the second-story balcony and jumped down to the soft grass below.
Margaret immediately grabbed a heavy blanket and wrapped it tightly around Olivia's shaking shoulders.
"We have to move right now, the police will be here any second," Margaret urged.
She helped Olivia out of the bed, supporting most of her body weight as they hobbled toward the door.
Margaret unlocked the deadbolt and cautiously stepped out into the dark, silent hallway.
They slowly made their way toward the grand staircase, listening for any sign of Diane.
Suddenly, the lights in the entire house flickered and completely died, plunging them into pitch-black darkness.

A cold, sinister laugh echoed from the bottom of the stairs.
Diane was standing in the foyer, holding a massive butcher knife and a single lit candle.
