Chapter 2 - The Standoff

Margaret did not flinch when the gun was pointed at her face.

She had stared down heavily armed insurgents in active war zones.

A cowardly, corrupt army major did not terrify her in the slightest.

"Put the gun down, Ethan," Margaret commanded calmly.

"If you pull that trigger, your life is completely over."

Olivia cried out in pure terror, wrapping her arms protectively around her pregnant belly.

Diane gasped and grabbed her son's arm, begging him to think clearly.

"We can just lock them in the basement and figure this out later," Diane pleaded.

Ethan shook his head, his eyes burning with absolute madness.

"She works for the Pentagon, Mom, they will never stop hunting us."

"We have to stage a home invasion right now."

He ordered Margaret to hand over her cell phone and the federal badge.

Margaret slowly reached into her jacket pocket, keeping her eyes fixed on the weapon.

She pulled out her phone and tossed it onto the carpet.

"Now give me the recorder, Olivia," Ethan demanded, aiming the gun at his wife.

Olivia sobbed, refusing to let go of the only evidence that could save her life.

"I said give it to me!" Ethan roared, stepping closer to the bed.

Margaret suddenly kicked the discarded cell phone directly into Ethan's shin.

The distraction worked perfectly.

Margaret lunged forward and grabbed the barrel of the handgun, forcing it toward the ceiling.

A deafening gunshot echoed through the bedroom, shattering the expensive crystal chandelier.

Glass rained down on them as they struggled violently for control of the weapon.

Diane grabbed a heavy brass lamp from the nightstand and swung it fiercely at Margaret's head.

The heavy metal struck Margaret's temple, sending her crashing to the hardwood floor.

Ethan snatched the gun back and aimed it directly at Olivia's chest.

"Hand over the recorder, or I swear I will end this right now."
