Chapter 5 - The Empty Safe

I stared at the blank, lifeless screen of my phone in pure, unadulterated horror.
Mark had intentionally linked our digital accounts together years ago under the guise of family convenience.
He must have used his administrative access to remotely wipe my entire device the second he stepped out into the hallway.
My single piece of concrete evidence was permanently gone, evaporating completely into the digital void.
I aggressively threw the useless phone across the sterile room, watching it shatter violently against the far wall.
I was completely out of time, and playing by the legal rules was absolutely no longer an option.
The next morning, the strict hospital doctor officially discharged me, completely unaware of the raging fire burning in my soul.
I had exactly two days before Mark and Eleanor were legally allowed to take my baby home from the NICU.
I called a heavily discounted cab and directed the driver to my own house, knowing Mark would be at work.
I desperately needed my hidden emergency cash, my passport, and the baby's social security paperwork from the home safe.
The house was eerily silent when I cautiously unlocked the heavy front door.
The dark bloodstain was still highly visible on the bathroom tile, a horrific reminder of my darkest hour.
I walked quickly to the master bedroom and opened the small closet door to access the heavy metal safe.
I rapidly typed in my secret numerical code, and the heavy steel door clicked open.
The safe was completely and utterly empty.
My passport, my extensive emergency savings, and every single piece of crucial identification were entirely gone.
In their place was a single, highly mocking handwritten note resting on the cold steel floor.
I picked it up, my hands shaking violently as I recognized Eleanor's elegant, cursive handwriting.
"A good mother never leaves her nest, but a crazy one belongs in a cage," the horrific note read.
Panic heavily seized my chest as I realized I had absolutely no money, no ID, and nowhere to run.
I needed to get back to the hospital immediately before they tried to cleverly move my baby early.
I rushed out to the front porch, frantically pulling out my shattered phone to try and dial 911 for a police escort.
Suddenly, three heavy black SUVs aggressively pulled up into the driveway, completely blocking my escape path.
Four large, intimidating men in dark suits stepped out of the vehicles, moving swiftly toward the porch.
The lead man reached into his jacket and pulled out a thick stack of official legal documents.
"Sarah Miller, you are hereby served with an absolute restraining order," the massive man barked loudly.
"You are legally forbidden from coming within five hundred feet of your husband, your mother-in-law, or your newborn daughter."
Before I could even process the words, Mark stepped slowly out of the last black SUV.

He looked directly at me with a completely terrifying, victorious smirk on his face.
"Pack your bags, Sarah, because the bank is officially foreclosing on this house tomorrow," Mark said coldly.
