Chapter 1 - The Blue Uniform

The heavy footsteps stopping in the doorway did not belong to a paramedic.

I looked past the first responder's shoulder and saw the dark navy uniform of a police officer.

A thick silver badge caught the harsh fluorescent light of the narrow hallway.

My mother-in-law, Eleanor, immediately stepped back against the wall.

Her arrogant posture crumbled instantly into the practiced hunch of a fragile old woman.

She raised her hands to her chest and let her voice tremble with fake relief.

"Oh, thank God you are here, officer," she cried out dramatically.

"My daughter-in-law is having a terrible mental breakdown, and she locked herself in there to hurt the baby."

I gasped loudly, the sharp pain in my split lip stinging as I tried to defend myself.

The first responder, who had heard the dispatcher confirm the lock was on the outside, turned his head slowly.

He stared at Eleanor with a look of absolute, unapologetic disgust.

"Ma'am, the lock on this door is on the hallway side, and I just watched you try to grab a newborn from a bleeding mother," the responder stated firmly.

The police officer placed a heavy hand on his utility belt.

His eyes swept carefully over the bloody tile, my swollen wrist, and my violently trembling body.

"Step away from the door right now, ma'am," the officer ordered Eleanor.

Eleanor's fake tears vanished instantly, quickly replaced by a cold, calculating glare.

"This is my son's house, and I am the only one thinking clearly here," she snapped back viciously.

The officer unclipped his radio and called for an ambulance, keeping his eyes fixed sharply on her.

I clutched my tiny daughter closer, feeling her small, warm chest rising and falling against mine.

I genuinely thought the nightmare was finally pausing.

I truly believed I was finally safe in the competent hands of the authorities.

Then, the unmistakable sound of a key turning in the front door echoed through the silent house.

Heavy footsteps sprinted aggressively down the hallway.

My husband, Mark, forcefully pushed his way past the police officer.

He looked wildly at the blood, at my bruised face, and then directly at his mother.

Instead of running to his newborn child or checking on his injured wife, Mark wrapped his arms tightly around Eleanor.

"Mom, are you okay?" he asked frantically, his voice thick with panic.

"She brutally attacked me, Mark," Eleanor sobbed heavily into his shirt.

Mark turned his head slowly toward me.

The look of pure, unadulterated hatred in his eyes made my blood run entirely cold.
