Chapter 3 - The Sterile Cage

I finally woke up to the steady, rhythmic beeping of a digital heart monitor.
The hospital room was completely sterile, filled with the harsh smell of strong bleach and rubbing alcohol.
My entire body felt incredibly heavy, as if I were pinned to the mattress by invisible lead weights.
I cautiously tried to move my right arm, but a sharp, shooting pain reminded me of the heavy cast encasing my swollen wrist.
Panic instantly flooded my chest as I realized my arms were completely empty.
My baby was nowhere to be found.
I forcefully hit the red nurse call button with my good hand, my heart rate skyrocketing on the monitor.
A tall, serious-looking nurse walked into the room almost immediately, holding a large metal clipboard.
"Where is my daughter?" I demanded desperately, my voice cracking from profound dehydration.
The nurse offered a highly professional but entirely unreadable smile.
"Your baby is currently safe in the neonatal intensive care unit for routine observation," she answered calmly.
I let out a massive sigh of relief and tried carefully to push myself up into a sitting position.
"I want to see her right now," I insisted.
The nurse stopped at the foot of my bed and crossed her arms tightly over her chest.
"I am afraid I cannot allow that at this exact moment," she said sternly.
The door to my room slowly opened again, and a woman in a sharp gray business suit stepped inside.
She carried a thick brown file folder and wore an expression of intense, judgmental scrutiny.
"Hello, Sarah, I am Ms. Higgins from Child Protective Services," the woman announced formally.
My blood ran entirely cold, instantly freezing in my veins as the reality of her title settled in.
"Why is CPS involved with my newborn?" I asked, trembling uncontrollably.
Ms. Higgins pulled up a small plastic chair and sat directly beside my hospital bed.
"We received a highly disturbing report from your husband and your mother-in-law," she explained coldly.
"They provided sworn statements claiming you have a severe history of untreated psychosis."
I shook my head violently, hot tears spilling freely down my pale cheeks.
"They are completely lying to you, she locked me in a bathroom and forced me to give birth entirely alone on the floor!" I cried out.
Ms. Higgins opened her folder, completely ignoring my emotional, desperate plea.
"They also claimed you were actively abusing prescription painkillers during your pregnancy," she continued reading.
"They said you locked yourself in that bathroom to hide your erratic, drug-induced behavior."
I stared at her in utter disbelief, suffocating under the massive weight of their elaborate lies.
"You can drug test me right this very second, I have absolutely nothing in my system," I begged frantically.
Ms. Higgins closed the folder with a sharp, terrifying snap.
"We already ran a full toxicology screen while you were unconscious in surgery," she revealed darkly.

She looked me dead in the eye, her expression hardening completely.
"The test came back entirely positive for high levels of illicit narcotics, Sarah."
