Chapter 6 - The Vault of Secrets

My blood turned to absolute ice as Maya's terrifying words echoed in my mind.
Julian had orchestrated the entire kidnapping just to stage a fake rescue and win back my trust.
He didn't want to save me; he just needed me to willingly lead him to the vault's location.
I squeezed Maya's hand, silently signaling her to remain calm and play along with his game.
I caught Vance's eye in the passenger seat and tapped out a subtle SOS rhythm on the center console.
Vance's posture stiffened slightly, signaling that he understood the silent, desperate warning.
We arrived at the towering glass structure of the First Sovereign Bank just before dawn broke.
Julian marched us past the sleepy security guards, using his powerful family name to bypass the protocols.
We descended into the underground vault, a massive room lined with polished steel lockboxes.
"Which box is it, Clara?" Julian asked, his voice completely losing its fake, comforting warmth.
"Box 815," I replied, walking slowly toward the far reinforced wall.
I slid the silver ring into the biometric scanner slot, and the heavy metal door clicked open.
Julian shoved me aside aggressively and greedily pulled the heavy metal lockbox from the wall.
He popped the lid open, expecting to see offshore bearer bonds and millions in rare diamonds.
Instead, the box contained a single, yellowed legal document and a small digital tape recorder.
Julian frowned in deep confusion, picking up the recorder and pressing the play button.
Margaret's voice echoed through the quiet vault, recorded secretly decades ago.
"Arthur can never know that Julian is not a Sterling," the recorded voice confessed tearfully.
"If the old man finds out Julian is the son of the pool boy, he will cut us both out of the empire forever."
Julian dropped the recorder, his face twisting into a mask of pure, unadulterated horror.

He slowly pulled his gun from his shoulder holster and pointed it directly at my forehead.
"You are going to help me burn this building to the ground, Clara."
