Chapter 1 - The Voice of Consequence

Margaret stopped dead in her tracks on the middle step.
Her eyes darted to the shattered, glowing screen of my phone resting on the marble.
"Margaret," a deep, raspy voice echoed from the tiny speaker.
It was not the police.
It was Arthur Vanderbilt, the billionaire patriarch of the family and Margaret's terrifying father-in-law.
Arthur lived in London and despised Margaret, only tolerating her because of my husband, Julian.
"I heard every word, Margaret," Arthur said with a cold, lethal calm.
"I heard you strike her, and I heard you threaten her life."
Margaret's aristocratic mask completely shattered into pure, unfiltered panic.
She lunged down the remaining stairs to snatch the phone from my trembling hand.
I rolled away across the cold marble, gritting my teeth against the agonizing pain in my bruised back.
"Arthur, it is a misunderstanding!" Margaret screamed, frantically chasing me around the foyer.
"Clara tripped, she is staging this whole thing to extort us for the trust fund!"
"I have already dispatched my private security team to the estate to extract her," Arthur replied before the line clicked dead.
Margaret stared at the disconnected phone, her chest heaving with desperate breaths.
Then the heavy front door swung open, and my husband Julian walked into the foyer.
Julian looked at me on the floor, then at his mother holding a silver letter opener she had grabbed from the console table.
I thought Julian would rush to help me up and protect me.

Instead, he calmly locked the front door, turned to his mother, and sighed.
"I told you to make sure her phone was dead before you pushed her, Mother."
