Chapter 7 - The Emergency Hearing

The bright morning sun felt entirely out of place as I walked through the heavy double doors of the family courthouse.

Sarah walked confidently beside me, her briefcase packed with character references and the CPS report from the pediatrician.

We took our seats at the defense table in the austere, wood-paneled courtroom.

My husband sat at the opposing table, wearing a perfectly tailored suit and a meticulously crafted expression of profound grief.

His mother sat right behind him in the gallery, clutching a rosary and occasionally dabbing her dry eyes with a tissue.

The judge, an older, stern-looking man, slammed his gavel and called the emergency custody hearing to order.

My husband’s expensive lawyer immediately took the floor, painting a terrifying picture of my supposed mental decline.

He presented staged photographs of our ruined bedroom and claimed I had violently destroyed the house before fleeing.

Then, he brought up the most damning accusation of all.

“Your Honor, this woman aggressively shaved her own daughter's head in a manic fit of rage,” the lawyer lied smoothly.

Sarah stood up immediately, objecting loudly and presenting the pediatrician's official medical report.

“The child explicitly told a mandated medical reporter that her grandmother committed the abuse, not my client,” Sarah countered.

The judge adjusted his glasses, carefully reading over the pediatrician’s signed documentation.

He looked over at my husband’s table, demanding an immediate explanation for the severe discrepancy.

My husband’s lawyer simply smiled, opening his briefcase and pulling out a crisp, notarized document.

“Your Honor, we have a sworn affidavit from that exact pediatrician, filed just an hour ago,” the lawyer announced.

He handed the document to the bailiff, who passed it up to the judge's bench.

“The doctor states she was coerced by the mother and admits the initial CPS report was completely falsified,” the lawyer concluded.
