Chapter 6 - The Burned Bridges

I lunged toward the bedroom door and violently rattled the brass handle, but it was completely secured from the hallway.
My mother-in-law laughed, a cold and grating sound that echoed off the bedroom walls.
She slowly stood up from the armchair, tapping the heavy iron poker menacingly against the hardwood floor.
“You are not leaving this room until the police arrive to find you in a state of violent hysteria,” she declared.
I backed away slowly, desperately scanning the room for anything I could use to defend myself.
I realized she wanted me to attack her so she could show the police physical bruises to support her fake story.
I took a deep breath, forcing my racing heart to slow down as I pulled my phone from my pocket.
I pressed the record button and held the screen up for her to clearly see what I was doing.
“I already know about the massive gambling debts, and I know you orchestrated this to steal my house,” I stated confidently.
Her arrogant smile faltered for a fraction of a second, her eyes darting nervously toward the recording device.
She lunged forward with surprising speed, swinging the iron poker directly toward my hand to smash the phone.
I dodged out of the way, and the heavy iron smashed through the drywall with a deafening crunch.
While she struggled to pull the weapon out of the wall, I grabbed a heavy brass lamp from the nightstand.
I did not hit her with it, but instead hurled the lamp directly through the large glass window overlooking the front yard.
The glass shattered loudly, raining down onto the driveway and triggering the expensive home security alarm.
The piercing siren blared through the house, completely ruining her plan for a quiet, controlled setup.
I climbed carefully through the broken window onto the sturdy oak tree branch outside and scrambled down to the ground.
I ran back to Sarah's car, speeding away into the night with my vital documents completely secured.
When I arrived at Sarah's apartment, I triumphantly pulled out my phone to show her the video of the attack.

Sarah pressed play, but her face instantly drained of all color as the file loaded.
The heavy iron poker had grazed the phone during the struggle, completely corrupting the video and audio files beyond repair.
