The interior of the house was a complete disaster, with my personal belongings thrown violently across the floor.
He was clearly staging the scene to look like the chaotic aftermath of a psychotic break.
I crept silently up the carpeted stairs, heading straight for the hidden wall safe in our master bedroom.
I punched in the digital code, grabbed my passport, the house deed, and my daughter's birth certificate.
I shoved the vital documents into my jacket pocket and turned around to leave the house forever.
The bedroom lights suddenly clicked on, blinding me with harsh fluorescence.
My mother-in-law was sitting comfortably in the corner armchair, holding a heavy iron fireplace poker.
