Chapter 4 - The Police Ambush

My daughter woke up screaming as the heavy fists continued to batter against the hotel door.

I rushed over to the bed, holding her tightly while whispering that everything was going to be completely fine.

I kept Sarah on the phone line and slowly walked toward the door with my hands raised perfectly in the air.

I unlocked the deadbolt, and three armed police officers immediately pushed their way into the small room.

The lead officer looked at my daughter’s shaved head and immediately placed his hand on his weapon.

“Ma'am, step away from the child right now,” he commanded with a stern, unforgiving glare.

I did exactly as I was told, loudly declaring that I was unarmed and completely cooperative.

I told the officers to look at the electronic file that my pediatrician had submitted to Child Protective Services earlier that morning.

The lead officer frowned and keyed his radio, asking dispatch to cross-reference my name with the CPS database.

The room fell into a tense, suffocating silence as we waited for the dispatcher to reply.

A minute later, the radio crackled, confirming that a verified medical doctor had already reported the grandmother for the abuse.

The officer’s aggressive posture instantly relaxed, and he took a slow step backward.

He apologized for the intrusion but warned me that my husband had filed a missing persons report painting me as a violent threat.

He told me they could not arrest me, but the emergency custody hearing was legally scheduled for tomorrow morning.

If I did not show up to court with physical evidence, the judge would undoubtedly hand my daughter over to her abusers.

The police left the room, leaving me alone with my terrified child and a ticking clock.

I picked up the phone and told Sarah I was going to my house to retrieve the deed and my passport.

Sarah begged me not to go, warning me that it was a dangerous trap.

I hung up the phone, knowing I had absolutely no other choice if I wanted to save my daughter's life.
