Chapter 5 - The Digital Trap

I stared at Ryan and Linda, knowing I had to play along to buy myself time.
"I need twenty-four hours to reverse the bank transfers without triggering an audit," I lied.
Ryan leaned over the desk, his eyes cold and dangerous.
"You have twelve hours, or you spend the rest of your life in Leavenworth."
They turned and walked out of the office, leaving me alone with the forged evidence.
I immediately locked the door and pulled up the classified personnel network.
I typed in the serial number from Linda's keycard.
The screen confirmed my worst fear.
The card belonged to General Thomas Vance, my mentor and the man who commanded this entire base.
He was the mole.
He had placed me in this position specifically because my clean record made me the perfect fall guy for his treason.
I had to flush him out before he could use Ryan's forged documents against me.
I created a highly encrypted file labeled "Undercover Asset Roster" and filled it with meaningless, fake data.
I embedded a silent tracking program inside the file that would alert me the moment it was opened.
Then, I deliberately emailed it to a secure server I knew Vance monitored.
If he was working for the enemy, he would not be able to resist opening a list of active spies.
I sat back and waited for the trap to spring.
Three hours later, my computer chirped.
The file had been opened, but not by General Vance.

My phone vibrated with a text message from an unknown number.
It was a photo of my attorney, Mark, tied to a chair in a dark basement with blood on his face.
