Chapter 2 - The Ghost in the System

I drove through the dark streets toward the Pentagon with the transmitter sitting on my passenger seat.
The jagged, shaved stubble on my head brushed against the collar of my jacket, a constant reminder of their betrayal.
I bypassed my usual office and headed straight for the secure underground intelligence bunker.
I flashed my new commander credentials at the security checkpoint and was immediately granted access.
Sitting at a secure terminal, I plugged the transmitter into an isolated diagnostic machine.
I needed to know exactly where this bug was sending my classified conversations.
The diagnostic software began tracing the encrypted signal back to its source.
While I waited, I pulled up the federal biometric database and entered Ryan's social security number.
I had met him three years ago during a rare vacation, and his simple charm had been a relief from my stressful life.
I realized now how perfectly he had inserted himself into my routine.
The database search finally finished loading, flashing a bright red warning across the screen.
The social security number Ryan had been using belonged to a child who had died in 1994.
I stared at the monitor in absolute disbelief.
My husband did not exist.
His entire identity was a meticulously crafted fabrication designed to pass basic civilian background checks.
Before I could process this horrifying revelation, the diagnostic machine beeped loudly.
It had successfully traced the transmitter's signal.

The bug was not transmitting to a foreign embassy or a distant overseas server.
It was sending my intercepted conversations directly to a computer located three floors above me in the Pentagon.
