Chapter 3 - The Enemy at the Gates

I memorized the IP address of the recipient server and immediately wiped the search history from my terminal.
Someone high up in the United States military command structure was working with the man I called my husband.
My phone buzzed in my pocket, displaying an incoming call from Mark.
"They know you locked the accounts," my attorney whispered frantically.
"Ryan just called my office threatening to burn my practice to the ground if I didn't reverse the bank transfers."
"Do not engage with him, Mark," I ordered sharply.
"You need to take your family, leave your house immediately, and check into a hotel under a fake name."
"I am officially classifying this as an active counter-intelligence operation."
I hung up the phone and walked into the main command center of my new intelligence unit.
A dozen analysts snapped to attention as I entered the room with my freshly shaved head.
Nobody dared to ask about my appearance.
"I need eyes on the main security gates of this facility," I commanded.
An analyst quickly brought up the live camera feeds on the massive central monitor.
There, standing at the visitor checkpoint, were Ryan and Linda.
They were screaming at the military police, waving documents, and demanding to speak to my commanding officer.
They were trying to cause a scene to destroy my reputation on my very first day.
I watched silently as a young MP ordered them to step back from the restricted zone.

Instead of complying, Linda pulled a small electronic keycard from her purse and swiped it against the gate scanner.
The heavy steel security barricades immediately lowered, granting them full access to the most secure base in the country.
