Chapter 10 - The Retribution

I forced myself to breathe slowly, blocking out Linda's maniacal laughter.

I had been trained in basic explosive ordnance disposal during my second tour in Afghanistan.

I pulled a tactical knife from my boot and carefully sliced open the plastic casing of the detonator.

There were three wires: red, blue, and black.

The timer showed twenty seconds left.

"It's a decoy circuit," I muttered to myself, tracing the hidden secondary wire tucked beneath the main battery.

With exactly four seconds left on the clock, I severed the thin yellow wire hidden at the back.

The digital timer instantly went black.

Mark collapsed into my arms, weeping with sheer relief.

Before Linda could say another word, the doors of the warehouse were blown violently off their hinges.

Dozens of federal agents and military police swarmed into the building, heavily armed.

I had triggered a silent emergency distress beacon embedded in my uniform before I left the base.

The agents arrested Linda, called paramedics for Mark, and secured the red hard drive.

By sunrise, the evidence on the drive had completely exonerated me and exposed the entire treasonous network.

General Vance was arrested in his office in handcuffs, his career and reputation destroyed.

I returned to my base as a hero, officially taking command of the intelligence unit with the full backing of the Pentagon.

My name was cleared, my finances were restored, and my toxic marriage was legally and permanently erased.

Months later, I sat in my spacious new office, enjoying a quiet moment of absolute victory.

Then, I noticed a bright red classified folder that someone had slipped under my locked door.

I opened the folder to find a faded photograph of my supposedly dead parents holding a baby boy.

The face of the baby was undeniably Ryan.

Attached to the photograph was a handwritten note that made my blood run cold.

"Did you really think this was just about your husband, sister?"
