Chapter 1 - The Offshore Secret

I stared at the glowing screen of my phone as my heart pounded a heavy rhythm against my ribs.
The message from my attorney, Mark, was brief but completely terrifying.
"They didn't just open a joint credit card behind your back," the text read.
"I pulled your full background check for the divorce proceedings."
"Ryan and Linda took out three massive loans in your name using a forged power of attorney."
"But that is not even the worst part."
"They funneled every single penny into an offshore shell company registered in a hostile foreign nation."
My blood ran completely cold.
This was no longer just a domestic dispute about an abusive husband and a controlling mother-in-law.
This was a calculated, deliberate act of financial terrorism aimed directly at my security clearance.
If the military discovered those loans before I reported them, my career would be over instantly.
I would be stripped of my command, dishonorably discharged, and likely sent to federal prison for espionage.
I looked back down the hallway toward the master bedroom where they were peacefully sleeping.
They had not shaved my head simply to humiliate me or force me to become a submissive housewife.
They had orchestrated a psychological breakdown so I would voluntarily resign before the military auditors found the money.
I took a deep breath, letting my intelligence training take over my racing mind.
I was no longer a victim in a toxic marriage.
I was an Army Colonel facing a severe national security threat inside my own home.
I quietly packed a tactical bag with my passport, my encrypted laptop, and my service weapon.
As I reached under the kitchen counter to grab my spare car keys, my fingers brushed against something hard and plastic.
I pulled it loose and held it up to the dim moonlight shining through the window.

It was a highly sophisticated, military-grade audio transmitter.
They had been listening to my classified phone calls for months.
