Chapter 8 - The Arrest

The sudden crash of the front door sent a wave of panic crashing through the dining room.

Uncle Arthur stood in the entryway, looking incredibly smug in his outdated, illegitimate police uniform.

He pointed a finger directly at Mark and loudly declared that he was placing him under citizen's arrest for child endangerment.

Brenda finally smiled, an ugly, triumphant smirk spreading across her pale face.

She told the entire family that Arthur was here to rescue the children and take them to a safe location.

However, the three armed officers standing behind Arthur did not move to arrest Mark.

Instead, the lead officer stepped forward and firmly grabbed Arthur by the shoulder.

He forcefully spun Arthur around and slammed him against the wall, slapping real handcuffs onto his wrists.

Arthur yelled in shock, demanding to know what the officers thought they were doing to a fellow cop.

The lead officer pulled the hidden earpiece from his radio and looked directly at Mark.

He thanked Mark for the live audio feed and confirmed that they had heard every single word of Brenda's confession.

The officer loudly announced that Arthur was being arrested for impersonating an officer, forgery, and conspiracy to commit kidnapping.

Brenda’s triumphant smile instantly vanished, replaced by an expression of pure, unadulterated terror.

She backed away from the table, knocking over a crystal wine glass that shattered violently onto the floor.

Two more officers walked into the dining room, holding an official arrest warrant bearing Brenda's name.

An officer grabbed Brenda's arms, ignoring her shrill screams about her high-society connections and her wealth.

She thrashed violently, screaming at Mark that he was an ungrateful son who was destroying the family.

Mark simply stood up, holding Leo’s hand securely in his own, and watched his mother be arrested.

Aunt Sarah and Uncle Greg watched in stunned silence as their sister was dragged out of her own home in handcuffs.

The lead detective approached Mark, confirming that the fake passports had been intercepted at Arthur's apartment.

He assured us that Brenda would be held without bail due to the severe flight risk she posed.

I pulled Lily tightly into my arms, feeling an overwhelming sense of relief wash away three days of absolute terror.

The toxic shadow that Brenda had cast over our lives was finally being dragged out into the harsh light of justice.

Mark turned to the remaining family members at the table, who were all still frozen in shock.

He told them that anyone who supported Brenda's actions was welcome to leave our lives forever.

Not a single relative spoke a word in Brenda's defense; they all just nodded in quiet, respectful agreement.

Mark took my hand, and together we walked our children out the front door, leaving the nightmare behind us.

As we walked down the driveway toward our car, the cool evening air felt cleaner than it had in years.

Then, Mark's cell phone rang with a call from the private investigator, and his face instantly turned pale.
