Chapter 7 - The Final Straw

The image of the bank transfers illuminated the dining room, exposing Brenda’s fifty-thousand-dollar withdrawal.

The text on the screen clearly linked the money to Uncle Arthur and a known manufacturer of counterfeit passports.

Uncle Greg stood up from his chair so fast that it tipped over and crashed onto the hardwood floor.

He looked at his sister with absolute disgust, asking Brenda if she was actually planning to kidnap her own grandchildren.

Brenda began stammering wildly, her carefully crafted image of a perfect matriarch shattering into a million pieces.

She tried to claim that the bank records were forged and that Mark was trying to frame her to steal her inheritance.

Aunt Sarah shook her head in sheer disbelief, telling Brenda that she was completely out of her mind.

Mark reached into his jacket pocket and pulled out a thick, crisp white envelope.

He walked over to Brenda’s pristine dinner plate and dropped the envelope right on top of her folded linen napkin.

He loudly announced that it was a formal restraining order, effective immediately, signed by a real federal judge.

He informed her that she was permanently banned from the children's school, our home, and our entire lives.

Brenda stared at the legal envelope as if it were a venomous snake about to strike her.

She looked wildly around the table, desperately searching for a single family member to defend her actions.

Nobody made eye contact with her; they all stared at their plates in profound shame and horror.

Brenda turned her furious eyes back to Mark, screaming that she was his mother and deserved his unconditional respect.

Mark stared back at her with absolute zero emotion in his eyes.

He firmly stated that he was Leo's father first, and protecting his son was the only thing that mattered.

He then turned away from her and walked over to where Leo and I were standing near the doorway.

Mark knelt down in front of our trembling son and offered him a warm, reassuring smile.

Gently, Mark lifted the navy baseball cap off Leo’s small head, exposing the ruined haircut.

Then, Mark reached up and took off the winter cap he had been wearing since he entered the house.

I gasped softly because I had not seen what was under his hat either.

Mark’s thick, dark hair was completely gone, shaved cleanly and evenly right down to the bare scalp.

He looked Leo directly in the eyes, his own eyes shining with unshed tears of pure love.

He whispered to our son that he would never have to walk alone, because his dad was in the bald club now too.

Leo's red eyes widened, and a tiny, radiant smile finally broke across his devastated face.

He reached up with both hands and rubbed his father’s smooth head before giggling softly for the first time in days.

Suddenly, the heavy oak front door of Brenda's house was violently kicked open from the outside.

Uncle Arthur stormed into the foyer holding a pair of handcuffs, closely followed by three armed police officers.
