Chapter 4 - The Twisted Web

Seeing Uncle Arthur’s face on the security footage made my blood run completely cold.
Arthur had always been Brenda’s favorite brother, despite his long history of deceit and manipulation.
Mark slammed his fist against the table, rattling the coffee mugs we had left out from breakfast.
He realized that Brenda had used Arthur’s old, expired badge to terrorize the school staff into submission.
This elevated the situation from a cruel family dispute to multiple felony charges.
They had committed fraud, impersonated a law enforcement officer, and effectively kidnapped a child.
I asked Mark if we should just call the real police and have them both arrested immediately.
Mark shook his head, staring intensely at the paused frame of Arthur on the laptop screen.
He explained that if we called the local police now, Arthur’s old friends on the force might tip him off.
Brenda would have time to destroy evidence, hire a high-priced lawyer, and spin a web of terrible lies.
She would absolutely claim that she acted out of genuine concern for Leo’s well-being.
She might even try to use Lily’s cancer against us, arguing that our medical crisis made us neglectful parents.
Mark insisted that we needed to trap Brenda in a situation where she could not possibly lie her way out.
We needed an audience of people she desperately wanted to impress.
Later that afternoon, my cell phone rang, shattering the tense silence in our home.
It was Brenda, calling as cheerfully as if she had not just traumatized her own grandson.
She casually invited our entire family to a large Sunday dinner at her pristine house.
She mentioned that all the aunts, uncles, and cousins would be attending to celebrate the start of the new month.
I wanted to scream at her and throw my phone directly at the wall.
Before I could say a word, Mark gently took the phone right out of my hand.
He spoke with a terrifyingly calm and polite tone that sent shivers down my spine.
He told his mother that we would absolutely be there and that we would not miss it for the world.
When he hung up the phone, he turned to me with a dark, calculated smile.
He asked me to start editing the hospital videos into a single, seamless presentation.
While I worked on the video, Mark made a phone call to a private investigator he knew from his corporate job.
He asked the investigator to dig into Uncle Arthur’s recent bank records and Brenda’s phone logs.
By Saturday evening, the investigator sent Mark a secure, encrypted file containing their findings.
Mark opened the file, read the first page, and let out a sharp gasp of disbelief.

Brenda had recently withdrawn fifty thousand dollars from her retirement account to pay Arthur for something much darker.
She had paid him to secure illegal, fake passports for both Leo and Lily.
