Chapter 6 - The Unveiling

Brenda tried to wave Mark off, insisting that we usually did family announcements after the dessert was served.
Mark ignored her protests completely and walked straight toward the massive television mounted in the adjoining family room.
The screen was perfectly visible from every single seat at the long dining table.
He plugged the USB drive into the side of the television and grabbed the remote control.
Brenda's voice took on a sharp, nervous edge as she demanded to know what Mark was doing.
Mark calmly told her that it was just a quick reminder of everything our family had survived this past year.
He pressed the play button, and the dining room instantly fell dead silent.
The first image to appear on the massive screen was a photograph of four-year-old Lily from thirteen months ago.
She was sitting on a cold hospital bed, pale and hooked up to a terrifying array of medical machines.
Her tiny hands were reaching up to touch the clumps of fine hair falling onto her fragile shoulders.
A loud gasp echoed from Aunt Sarah, who had her hand clamped firmly over her mouth.
The screen transitioned into a video clip of Leo standing on a step stool in the hospital bathroom.
His sweet, innocent voice played clearly through the television speakers for the entire family to hear.
He told his sister not to cry, promising that he would grow his hair super long until hers grew back.
A photo flashed of Lily asleep during her chemotherapy infusion, her fingers tangled tightly in Leo’s golden curls.
Around the table, the shift in the family's mood was absolute and instantaneous.
Forks were quietly set down on plates, and Cousin Claire openly wiped a tear from her cheek.
Then, the emotional tone of the video abruptly and violently shifted.
A new photograph appeared on the screen, taken just three days ago in our living room.
It was a close-up of Leo's tear-streaked, devastated face, clutching a single severed golden curl in his hand.
He was wearing the jagged, skin-scraped hack job that Brenda had given him in the school parking lot.
Underneath the heartbreaking picture, bold text spelled out the transcription of the kindergarten’s security log.
The text clearly stated that the child had been removed under the false pretense of a catastrophic emergency.
The silence in Brenda's dining room was no longer just quiet; it was completely suffocating.
Brenda’s face drained of all color, turning from a blotchy red to a sickly ash-gray.
She opened her mouth to speak, but the shock of being publicly exposed had stolen her voice.
Mark stepped to the head of the table, his eyes burning with a cold, devastating fury.
He told his mother that she did not just give a boy a haircut; she had committed fraud and traumatized a child.
He declared that she had stolen the only thing Leo felt he could give his dying sister, all because of her own vanity.
Brenda finally found her voice, screaming that she had hired a lawyer and that we were entirely unfit parents.

She proudly announced that her brother Arthur was waiting outside with a judge to take the children right now.
Mark did not flinch; he simply pressed the next button on the remote, revealing the bank transfers for the fake passports.
