Chapter 3 - The Secret Accomplice

Mark and I stared at the computer screen in complete and utter disbelief.

There was a uniformed police officer standing in the reflection of Brenda's photograph.

This meant Brenda did not act alone when she abducted our son from his school.

Mark’s jaw tightened as he zoomed in on the officer's badge in the blurry reflection.

The badge number was partially obscured, but the shape of the patch belonged to our local town precinct.

I felt a wave of nausea wash over me as I realized the depth of Brenda's terrifying plan.

She had obviously used this officer to bypass the school's strict security protocols.

That explained exactly why the school secretary had released Leo without calling me for permission first.

Mark grabbed his yellow legal pad and aggressively scribbled down the new piece of evidence.

He told me that Brenda had always bragged about her connections in the local government.

I reminded him about the emergency custody petition I had found tucked inside Leo’s backpack.

Mark reviewed the document and pointed out that it lacked a judge's official signature.

It was a scare tactic, drafted to intimidate me into handing over control of my children.

But it proved that Brenda was actively building a fraudulent legal case against us.

Mark asked me to hand over my phone because he needed the videos of Lily’s hospital visits.

He wanted every clip of Leo holding Lily’s hand, every voice recording of his promise, and every photo of his golden curls.

I asked him how this was going to help us stop Brenda and her corrupt police friend.

Mark looked at me with cold, determined eyes and promised that he was going to publicly destroy her.

The next morning, Mark drove straight to the elementary school to demand answers from the principal.

I stayed home with the kids, keeping the doors locked and the security cameras activated.

Three hours later, Mark returned home looking completely exhausted but incredibly focused.

He revealed that the principal had initially refused to show him the security footage from Thursday.

However, Mark had threatened to involve the state board of education and a massive civil lawsuit.

The principal finally broke down and confessed everything in a state of sheer panic.

Brenda had shown up to the school with a man she claimed was a juvenile court officer.

This man had presented a fake emergency removal order to the terrified school staff.

Mark managed to get a copy of the security tape showing the man's face clearly.

We played the video on the laptop, watching the officer hand the forged paperwork to the secretary.

I froze when the man on the screen turned his face toward the camera.

It was Mark's estranged uncle, Arthur, who had been fired from the police force ten years ago for severe corruption.
