Chapter 5 - The Sunday Trap

The realization that Brenda was planning to flee the country with our children nearly made me pass out.
She had not just wanted to change Leo's hair; she was systematically planning to steal our entire family.
Mark held me tightly as I sobbed into his shoulder, terrified by the sheer magnitude of her delusion.
He promised me that Brenda would never get within a hundred feet of our children ever again.
Sunday morning arrived with a heavy, suffocating tension hanging over our house.
I dressed Lily in her favorite pink dress and placed a matching soft beanie over her recovering head.
I found Leo sitting quietly in his room, rubbing his rough, uneven hair with a sad expression.
I knelt beside him and gently placed a soft navy baseball cap over his head, pulling it down over his ears.
I told him he looked incredibly handsome and that nobody would be allowed to take his hat off today.
Mark walked into the room wearing his winter jacket, though the weather outside was perfectly mild.
He had the small, silver USB drive tucked safely into his front pocket.
The drive contained the video I had made, along with all the criminal evidence the investigator had uncovered.
We loaded the kids into the car and drove in absolute silence toward Brenda’s large suburban home.
The driveway was already packed with the cars of aunts, uncles, and distant cousins.
Brenda had clearly invited everyone she could think of to show off her perfect matriarchal image.
When we walked through the front door, the air was thick with the smell of roasted garlic and unearned smugness.
Brenda was holding court at the head of the long mahogany dining table, wearing a pastel sweater set.
She beamed with a sickeningly sweet smile when she saw us walk into the dining room.
Her eyes immediately locked onto Leo, and her fake smile faltered for a fraction of a second.
She did not wait five seconds before projecting her voice so every relative would stop and look at us.
She loudly demanded that Leo take off his silly hat so everyone could see how grown-up he looked without his girl curls.
Leo shrank behind my legs in sheer terror, his tiny hands gripping my jeans.
My hands curled into tight fists, but Mark placed a steady, reassuring hand on my lower back.
Mark spoke evenly, telling his mother that Leo would be keeping the hat on for the entire evening.
Brenda rolled her eyes dramatically toward her sister, loudly complaining that Mark always babied the boy.
She told the room that she had simply done what needed to be done a year ago.
A few oblivious relatives chuckled awkwardly, assuming it was just a normal family disagreement over a haircut.
Brenda preened, basking in what she assumed was the family's tacit approval of her actions.
She announced that dinner was ready and gestured for everyone to take their designated seats.

Mark stepped forward, pulling the USB drive from his pocket, and announced that we had a special family update to share first.
Brenda frowned in annoyance, completely unaware that Mark’s jacket pocket also concealed a live microphone streaming directly to the local police precinct.
