Chapter 9 - The Police Chief

I lunged forward and covered Sarah's mouth with my muddy hand.
I looked desperately into her terrified eyes and begged her to stay completely silent.
I reminded her of the time I covered her shifts when her own mother was sick in the hospital.
Sarah's eyes softened, and she slowly nodded her head in understanding.
I removed my hand, and she whispered that the entire house was looking for me.
The file transfer on the laptop finally hit one hundred percent.
I yanked the flash drive out and shoved it securely into my pocket.
Before I could thank Sarah, a loud, booming voice echoed from the adjoining hallway.
It was the Chief of Police, speaking in hushed, urgent tones.
I pressed my ear against the thin wall to listen to the conversation.
The Chief was demanding his final payment from Margaret before he officially issued a shoot-to-kill order on me.
Margaret laughed cruelly and promised him double the money once my body was in the morgue.
I felt a surge of absolute disgust for the woman who had made my life a living hell.
Sarah quietly pointed to a small laundry chute that led directly to the exterior garbage bins.
She whispered that it was my only way out before the guards searched this floor.
I hugged her tightly and slid headfirst down the dark, narrow metal chute.
I landed hard in a pile of damp linens just outside the mansion's rear exit.
The storm was raging violently now, washing away all visibility.
I sprinted toward the distant tree line, freedom finally within my grasp.
Suddenly, the blinding spotlight of a security watchtower locked directly onto my running figure.
A loud siren blared through the stormy night, waking the entire estate.
I heard the terrifying sound of heavy metal cages being thrown open.
Margaret had ordered the release of her highly trained, vicious guard dogs.
May you like
The aggressive barking echoed through the rain, closing in on my position rapidly.
I scrambled up the slick, muddy embankment, completely desperate to reach the top of the perimeter wall.
