Chapter 8 - The Ghost in the House

Richard vehemently argued against my plan to return to the Whitmore estate.
He said it was absolute suicide to walk back into a house swarming with hostile security.
I fiercely reminded him that I had lived in that house as a servant for six agonizing years.
I knew every blind spot in the cameras, every squeaky floorboard, and every hidden servant passageway.
I had to do this alone because any unfamiliar face would trigger the alarm instantly.
Richard finally relented, handing me a microscopic earpiece and a heavy, encrypted flash drive.
His security team dropped me off two miles from the estate under the cover of a massive thunderstorm.
The pouring rain perfectly masked the sound of my footsteps as I approached the towering iron gates.
I bypassed the main entrance and slipped through a rusted grate covering the old drainage tunnel.
I crawled through the filthy, rat-infested pipe until I reached the sub-basement of the mansion.
I emerged from the shadows like a ghost, completely dripping with mud and rainwater.
I crept silently up the narrow servant stairs toward the sprawling laundry room.
The house above me was bustling with activity as Margaret hosted an emergency press conference.
I slipped into the laundry room and locked the heavy wooden door behind me.
I pushed the heavy industrial washing machine aside, my muscles screaming in absolute agony.
I reached into the dark, hollow space behind the drywall and felt the cold metal of a laptop.
I pulled it out and quickly connected Richard's encrypted flash drive.
The screen lit up, and the file transfer bar slowly began to creep across the display.
Twenty percent.
Forty percent.
Suddenly, I heard heavy footsteps approaching the laundry room door.
The brass doorknob slowly began to turn.
I held my breath, gripping a heavy iron iron to use as a weapon.
The door swung open, and a young maid named Sarah stepped inside carrying a basket of towels.
May you like
She dropped the basket, her eyes wide with terror as she recognized my muddy face.
She opened her mouth to scream for the security guards.
