Chapter 10 - The False Victory

I clawed wildly at the muddy wall, my fingers bleeding as I fought for traction.
The snarling guard dogs were practically snapping at the heels of my boots.
Suddenly, a strong pair of hands reached down from the top of the wall and hauled me violently upward.
It was Richard's security chief.
We tumbled over the other side just as the massive dogs slammed violently against the brick wall.
We ran to the waiting getaway car, and the driver floored the accelerator before I even closed the door.
I handed the encrypted flash drive to Richard, completely out of breath but smiling fiercely.
He immediately plugged it into his secure terminal and uploaded the original files to every major news outlet in the country.
The irrefutable evidence of Margaret's embezzlement and forgery spread across the internet like wildfire.
Within an hour, the corrupt Police Chief was arrested by federal agents in his own precinct.
Margaret Whitmore was dragged out of her mansion in handcuffs on live national television, screaming like a lunatic.
All of her frozen assets were legally transferred to a trust fund in my daughters' names.
We arrived back at the penthouse, and I collapsed onto the sofa in sheer, unadulterated relief.
I walked into the bedroom and kissed the foreheads of my three beautiful, sleeping girls.
We were finally safe, incredibly wealthy, and totally free from six years of brutal torment.
I went back to the living room and decided to open Michael's old laptop just to look at his old family photos.
I found a hidden, heavily encrypted video file casually titled "The Truth About Richard."

I curiously clicked play, and my late husband's face appeared on the bright screen, badly bruised and absolutely terrified.
"Emily, if you are watching this, it means Richard Bennett finally found you, and you need to run before he kills you and the girls just like he's going to kill me," Michael whispered frantically.
