Chapter 4 - The Bounty

The penthouse spun wildly around me.

Murdered.

The word echoed in my mind over and over until it lost all meaning.

I begged Richard to tell me exactly what Michael had discovered before he died.

Richard pointed to the heavy silver key still clutched tightly in my fist.

He said Michael was secretly auditing Margaret's charitable foundation.

He had found irrefutable proof that Margaret was laundering millions of dollars for a violent criminal syndicate.

Michael had hidden the evidence in a private offshore bank vault.

The silver key Lily found in the attic was the only way to access that specific vault.

Margaret had banished us to the laundry room to keep us close while she tore the estate apart looking for it.

Suddenly, Richard's head of security burst into the living room.

His face was pale, and he was holding a highly encrypted communication tablet.

He announced that they had just intercepted a dark web transmission originating from Margaret's private IP address.

She had just placed a five million dollar bounty on my head.

The bounty explicitly stated that I was to be captured alive, and the silver key was to be retrieved at all costs.

My blood ran completely cold.

My daughters were sleeping peacefully in the next room, completely unaware that assassins were now hunting their mother.

Richard told his security chief to lock down the entire building and activate the bulletproof window shutters.

He turned to me and said we had to retrieve the evidence from the bank tonight before Margaret's assassins found us.

I looked toward the hallway where my girls were resting.

I nodded my head, knowing I had to destroy Margaret before she destroyed my family.

Richard handed me a dark tactical jacket and a pair of sturdy boots.

He told me the bank was located in a highly secure underground facility across town.

We took a secret freight elevator down to the basement parking garage.

As the elevator doors slid open, all the lights in the parking garage simultaneously went completely dark.

The faint, chilling sound of automatic weapons being loaded echoed through the pitch-black concrete room.
