Chapter 5 - The Vault

Richard immediately shoved me back into the corner of the dark elevator.

He drew a silenced pistol from his shoulder holster and stepped in front of me.

Two red laser sights suddenly cut through the darkness, aiming directly at Richard's chest.

Richard's elite security team dropped from the ventilation shafts above the garage like absolute shadows.

A chaotic, muffled gunfight erupted in the dark.

I covered my ears and closed my eyes, praying I would survive to see my girls again.

Within thirty seconds, the garage fell deadly silent.

The emergency lights flickered back on, revealing three armed mercenaries unconscious on the floor.

Richard grabbed my hand and pulled me toward a sleek, unmarked black sedan.

We sped out of the garage and tore through the rainy city streets toward the private bank.

The underground facility looked like a heavily fortified military bunker.

Richard used his elite billionaire status to bypass the front desk and access the subterranean vault levels.

We walked down a long, echoing corridor lined with solid titanium safe deposit boxes.

We finally reached box number 704.

My hands shook violently as I inserted the heavy silver key into the lock.

It turned with a satisfying click.

I pulled the metal drawer open and found a thick manila envelope inside.

I ripped it open and pulled out a stack of financial documents and a small USB drive.

The documents proved Margaret had been stealing from the charity for over a decade.

But the final document in the stack made me gasp out loud.

It was a DNA test proving that Margaret was not Michael's biological mother.

Before I could even process this shocking revelation, a deafening alarm began to blare.

The massive steel vault door at the end of the corridor began to swing shut on its own.

Richard sprinted toward the door, trying to block it with a heavy metal cart.

The mechanical force crushed the cart like a tin can and slammed shut with tremendous force.

The electronic locking mechanism engaged with a heavy, terrifying thud.

We were completely trapped inside a hermetically sealed titanium vault.

A digital screen on the wall suddenly flashed to life, displaying Margaret's smiling face.

She cheerfully informed us that all oxygen would be pumped out of the room in exactly ten minutes.
