Chapter 3 - The Sanctuary
The armored SUV glided silently through the bustling city streets.
Richard brought us to a towering glass skyscraper in the heart of the financial district.
The private elevator opened directly into a massive, sunlit penthouse.
It was more luxurious than anything I had ever seen, even at the Whitmore estate.
A warm, kind housekeeper immediately greeted us and led the girls to a massive bathroom for a hot bubble bath.
For the first time in six years, my daughters were treated like human beings.
I stood in the center of the living room, clutching the strange silver key in my hand.
I turned to Richard and asked him why a billionaire would risk his reputation for a lowly servant.
Richard walked over to a crystal decanter and poured two glasses of water.
He handed me a glass and looked at me with an expression of profound sorrow.
He told me that he did not do this for charity.
He did it because he owed a massive debt to the man who saved his life ten years ago.
That man was my late husband, Michael.
I stared at him in utter shock.
Michael had never once mentioned knowing a billionaire named Richard Bennett.
Richard explained that they had been college roommates before his own company took off.
He said Michael had secretly funded Richard's first business venture when everyone else laughed at him.
I felt a tear slip down my cheek as I remembered Michael's endless generosity.
I whispered that it was a tragedy Michael died in that horrible car accident before he could see Richard's success.
Richard's expression suddenly hardened into stone.
He placed his glass down on the table with a heavy thud.
He looked me dead in the eye.
He told me that Michael did not die in a car accident.
He said the police report was a complete fabrication paid for by Margaret Whitmore.
My knees went weak, and I had to grab the edge of the sofa to keep from collapsing.
