Chapter 9 - The Turning Point

The courtroom fell into absolute, stunned silence as Dr. Vance took the witness stand.
Marcus approached the podium, holding a very old, yellowed file folder.
"Dr. Vance, can you please explain your findings regarding the birth records of Leah Hutchkins?" Marcus asked clearly.
Dr. Vance adjusted her glasses and looked directly at the judge.
"Upon reviewing the sealed archives, it is absolutely clear that Barbara and Richard Hutchkins are not Leah's biological parents," Dr. Vance stated.
"Leah was adopted through a closed, private agency in 1992."
Barbara leaped from her chair, her face red with absolute fury.
"That is a complete lie, she is my flesh and blood!" Barbara screamed across the room.
Judge Higgins banged his gavel violently, ordering Barbara to sit down and remain silent.
"Furthermore," Dr. Vance continued calmly, "the adoption was never legally finalized due to Richard's criminal record at the time."
"Legally speaking, Barbara and Richard have absolutely no biological or legal standing as grandparents."
Marcus turned to Judge Higgins, who suddenly looked incredibly nervous about his corrupt arrangement.
"Your Honor, the plaintiffs have committed massive perjury and have zero legal right to petition for custody," Marcus declared loudly.
Barbara’s lawyer desperately scrambled through his messy notes, looking completely out of his depth.
"Your Honor, we still have a signed, handwritten letter from Leah herself!" the sleazy lawyer shouted desperately.
He waved a piece of paper in the air, claiming it was Leah's dying wish for Barbara to have Ellie.
The lawyer approached the bench and handed the supposedly sacred letter to the judge.
Judge Higgins read it quickly, clearly looking for any excuse to rule in Barbara's favor.
"This letter clearly states Leah wanted her mother to raise the child," the judge said.
I felt a cold sweat break out on the back of my neck.
Marcus smiled and pulled a small, silver flash drive from his pocket.
"Your Honor, I would like to play an audio recording my client found hidden in his late wife's desk," Marcus requested.
The judge reluctantly allowed it, and Marcus plugged the drive into the court's audio system.

Leah’s soft, beautiful voice filled the quiet courtroom, instantly bringing tears to my eyes.
"Derek, if you are listening to this, Barbara is forcing me to write a fake custody letter," Leah's recorded voice cried softly.
