Chapter 10 - The Final Verdict

"She threatened to ruin you financially if I didn't write exactly what she dictated," Leah's voice continued on the recording.

"Please, Derek, never let that monster near our beautiful daughter."

The recording clicked off, leaving a heavy, undeniable truth hanging in the courtroom air.

Barbara sat completely frozen, her mouth slightly open, entirely out of lies to tell.

Judge Higgins looked pale, realizing his corrupt association with Richard was about to be highly publicized.

The judge cleared his throat loudly and slammed his gavel down with finality.

"This entire petition is dismissed with extreme prejudice," Judge Higgins announced firmly.

"Furthermore, I am issuing a permanent, unbreakable restraining order against Barbara and Richard Hutchkins."

The bailiff immediately stepped forward to escort the furious, defeated plaintiffs out of the room.

Barbara shot me one final look of absolute venom, but I just smiled and waved goodbye.

I picked Ellie up in my arms and walked out of the courthouse feeling completely, wonderfully free.

We drove to her favorite ice cream shop and ordered the biggest chocolate sundaes they had on the menu.

The dark cloud that had hovered over our family for three long years was finally gone.

Tom came over for dinner that night, apologizing deeply for his wife's horrible betrayal.

I forgave my brother, knowing we were finally rid of the toxic people who tried to destroy us.

Ellie laughed loudly at the dinner table, her hazel eyes bright and entirely full of pure joy.

Our lives were finally peaceful, completely safe, and wonderfully ours again.

Later that night, I carried a heavy, antique wooden clock into the garage to finally throw it away.

The ugly piece slipped from my hands, shattering into sharp pieces against the cold concrete floor.

Inside a hidden compartment, a massive stack of unopened letters spilled out, all addressed to Leah.

The return address belonged to an inmate at a maximum-security prison, and the first letter began with the words, "Thank you for hiding the truth about Ellie's real father."
