Chapter 8 - The Custody Hearing Begins

Three heavily armed state troopers burst into the tiny room with their weapons drawn.

Barbara screamed and dropped the briefcase, instantly throwing her hands up in surrender.

Jennifer collapsed to her knees, sobbing hysterically as an officer roughly cuffed her wrists.

An officer quickly cut the thick ropes binding my hands, and I sprinted directly into the next room.

Ellie was sitting safely on a dusty couch, looking terrified but entirely unharmed.

I scooped her up tightly into my arms, burying my face in her soft hair and crying openly.

The police arrested Barbara and Jennifer on the spot for kidnapping, extortion, and assault.

Tom was rescued from the cabin by local deputies and immediately filed for divorce from Jennifer.

But despite the criminal charges, Barbara's high-priced lawyers managed to bail her out the very next morning.

They boldly pushed forward with the emergency custody hearing, relying on Judge Higgins to save them.

Monday morning arrived, and I walked into the county courthouse holding Ellie's hand tightly.

Marcus Sterling walked beside us, carrying a massive box of financial and legal evidence.

We entered the courtroom and saw Barbara sitting at the plaintiff's table, looking completely unfazed.

Richard Hutchkins, the man I thought was dead, was sitting right beside her in an expensive suit.

Judge Higgins banged his wooden gavel, his expression strictly favoring the plaintiffs.

Barbara's sleazy lawyer stood up and completely ignored the weekend kidnapping incident.

"Your Honor, we are here to rescue this child from an unstable, financially ruinous environment," the lawyer proclaimed.

He presented heavily doctored bank statements trying to prove I was bankrupt.

He even submitted a fraudulent psychological evaluation claiming I was severely depressed and unfit to parent.

Judge Higgins nodded sympathetically at Barbara and Richard, clearly ready to rubber-stamp the order.

"Mr. Sterling, unless you have absolute proof to the contrary, I am inclined to grant custody to the grandparents," Judge Higgins announced.

Marcus Sterling stood up slowly, a confident, predatory smile spreading across his face.

"Your Honor, I have absolute proof, but it is not just financial," Marcus stated clearly.

Marcus turned around and signaled to the heavy wooden doors at the back of the courtroom.

The doors swung open, and an elderly woman in a neat grey suit walked down the center aisle.

Barbara gasped loudly, her face draining of all color in an instant.

"Who is this witness, Counselor?" Judge Higgins demanded, looking annoyed.

"Your Honor, this is Dr. Evelyn Vance, the chief archivist of the state adoption registry," Marcus announced.
