Chapter 5 - The Disappearance

The entire front office erupted into absolute chaos.
The two police officers instantly grabbed their radios, calling for immediate backup.
Barbara's smug expression completely vanished, replaced by genuine, frantic confusion.
"What do you mean she isn't here?" Barbara shrieked at the principal.
"Her teacher said she went to the restroom ten minutes ago and never came back," Mrs. Gable explained, trembling.
My mind raced through a thousand terrifying scenarios in a matter of seconds.
I pulled out my phone and dialed my brother Tom's number with shaking fingers.
He answered on the first ring, his voice sounding incredibly strained.
"Tom, Ellie is missing from the school, did you see anything?" I demanded.
"Derek, calm down," Tom whispered quickly into the receiver.
"I have her."
A massive wave of relief crashed over me, quickly followed by intense confusion.
"What do you mean you have her, Tom?" I asked, stepping away from the officers.
"Jennifer sneaked her out the side door before Barbara walked into the front office," Tom explained.
"We knew Barbara was planning an ambush, so we got there first."
"Where are you taking her?" I asked, looking nervously over my shoulder at the cops.
"We are heading to our cabin upstate, she is perfectly safe with us," Tom assured me.
"Do not tell the police, or they will arrest us for kidnapping," Tom warned.
I hung up the phone, forcing my face to look completely panicked for Barbara's benefit.
"The police are locking down the perimeter, she has to be here somewhere," the officer announced.
I pretended to search the school for an hour, playing the role of the terrified father perfectly.
Eventually, the police told Barbara she had to leave the premises while they conducted their investigation.
I drove back to Marcus Sterling's office to formulate a plan to destroy the fake custody order.
Marcus was waiting for me with a massive stack of banking documents printed on his desk.
"I found the connection between Judge Higgins and Barbara," Marcus said with a dark smile.
"Judge Higgins has a massive gambling debt, and Richard Hutchkins paid it off two months ago."
"We can get the emergency order entirely thrown out for corruption by tomorrow morning," Marcus promised.
I finally felt a glimmer of real hope for the first time in twenty-four hours.
My phone chimed with a text message, and I expected it to be a safe arrival update from Tom.

Instead, it was a photo from an unknown number.
It was a picture of my brother Tom, lying unconscious on the floor of his own cabin.
