Chapter 6 - The Setup

I stared at the horrifying photograph of my brother, my blood turning to ice.

A second text message immediately followed the picture.

"If you want your daughter back, bring the life insurance trust documents to the old mill in exactly one hour."

I showed the terrifying messages to Marcus, who instantly reached for his desk phone to call the FBI.

"Do not call the police, Marcus!" I ordered, slamming my hand down on his desk.

"If they see cops, they might hurt Ellie."

Marcus looked at me with deep concern but slowly lowered the phone receiver.

"Derek, this isn't just a custody dispute anymore, this is federal kidnapping and extortion," Marcus warned.

"I know, but I have to get my daughter back first," I replied fiercely.

"I need you to draft a document that looks exactly like the transfer of the life insurance trust."

Marcus quickly printed a massive stack of legal-looking papers and placed them in a heavy leather briefcase.

"I am putting a GPS tracker inside the lining of this briefcase," Marcus told me.

"If you do not call me in exactly ninety minutes, I am sending the state troopers to your location."

I nodded, grabbed the heavy briefcase, and sprinted out to my car.

The old mill was an abandoned industrial complex located miles outside the city limits.

I drove recklessly, breaking every speed limit, my mind entirely focused on saving Ellie.

I arrived at the decaying brick building just as the sun began to set behind the trees.

I walked slowly through the rusted metal doors, the briefcase clutched tightly in my hand.

The vast interior was damp, dark, and smelled heavily of mold and old oil.

"I'm here!" I shouted into the empty space, my voice echoing off the concrete walls.

From the shadows of the upper catwalk, a figure slowly stepped into the dim light.

It was my sister-in-law, Jennifer.

She was holding a small, black handgun, and it was pointed directly at my chest.

"I'm so sorry, Derek," Jennifer whispered, her hands shaking violently.

"Barbara promised to pay off our massive bankruptcy debt if I helped her."

Before I could even process the absolute betrayal, a heavy blow struck the back of my head.
