Chapter 4 - The School Ambush

I sprinted out of the bank, completely ignoring the manager calling out behind me.

I threw my car into gear and sped toward Crestwood Elementary, my tires squealing on the asphalt.

My mind raced with terrifying images of Barbara dragging my daughter out of her classroom.

I arrived at the school in less than seven minutes, leaving my car parked haphazardly in the fire lane.

I burst through the front doors of the administrative office, my chest heaving for air.

Barbara was standing at the front desk, looking incredibly smug in her expensive designer coat.

Two uniformed police officers were standing right beside her, holding a stack of official paperwork.

"You have absolutely no right to be here," I shouted, pointing directly at her.

Barbara turned to me, her fake, innocent smile plastered perfectly on her face.

"I have a temporary emergency custody order signed by a judge," Barbara announced loudly.

The taller police officer stepped forward and handed me a copy of the order.

"Mr. Vance, we are legally required to remove the child and place her with her grandmother pending a full hearing," the officer stated.

I scanned the document frantically, looking for the judge's signature at the bottom.

It was Judge Higgins, a man known to be close personal friends with Barbara's country club circle.

"This order is based entirely on fraudulent financial claims and a false police report," I argued desperately.

"You can take that up with the court on Monday, sir," the officer replied coldly.

The school principal, Mrs. Gable, walked out of her office looking visibly distressed.

"I'm sorry, Mr. Vance, but my hands are legally tied," Mrs. Gable said softly.

"Please go get my daughter, Mrs. Gable," I whispered, feeling my heart shatter into pieces.

Mrs. Gable walked down the hallway toward the third-grade classrooms.

Barbara crossed her arms and glared at me with absolute triumph shining in her eyes.

"I told you last night that you would regret disrespecting me," Barbara hissed quietly.

We waited in agonizing silence for five agonizing minutes.

Finally, Mrs. Gable returned from the hallway, completely alone and out of breath.

"Officers, we have a massive problem," Mrs. Gable stammered in sheer panic.

"Ellie is not in her classroom, and she is not anywhere on the school grounds."
