Chapter 7 - The Hostage

Nora aimed the red laser directly at Lily's tiny chest.
"Do not move a single muscle, Julian," Nora commanded coldly.
I raised my hands slowly, my mind racing for a way out of this impossible situation.
"You poisoned the ventilation system," I stated, coughing as the sweet smoke burned my lungs.
"It is just a mild neurotoxin to keep Vance quiet, but it will be lethal if he does not get the antidote," she sneered.
Nora grabbed Lily by the arm, dragging the crying child toward her armored vehicle outside.
"Why are you doing this, Nora?" I yelled, following her carefully.
Tears suddenly welled up in the treacherous maid's eyes.
"Because Marcus kidnapped my real daughter six years ago," Nora cried out in raw agony.
The confession hit me like a physical blow.
"He told me if I played the perfect maid and helped him destroy you, I would get my baby back," she sobbed.
Nora forced Lily into the backseat and pointed her weapon at my head.
"Get in the driver's seat, Julian, we are going to the docks," she ordered.
I had no choice but to obey, driving the armored car through the deserted city streets.
We arrived at Pier 42, where a massive, luxurious yacht was preparing to depart.
Marcus was standing on the main deck, holding Amelia roughly by her hair.
My wife looked bruised and fragile, but her eyes were still full of fierce determination.
Nora marched me and Lily up the boarding ramp at gunpoint.
"I brought you the final loose ends, Marcus," Nora shouted over the sound of the boat engines.
"Now give me back my daughter!"
Marcus smiled his chilling, arrogant smile and pulled a silver revolver from his coat.

He did not point it at me or Amelia.
He pointed it directly at Nora and pulled the trigger without a second of hesitation.
