Chapter 6 - The Safe House

The undercover investigator pulled me to my feet and handed me a spare pistol.
"My name is Vance, and we do not have much time," he urged.
We sprinted out of the sanatorium, stealing one of the guard's vehicles to escape the compound.
We rushed back to the motel, retrieved a terrified Lily, and drove to a heavily fortified safe house in the city limits.
The safe house was an old warehouse filled with surveillance equipment and weapons.
Vance locked the steel doors and immediately began treating my injured ribs.
"Your brother found out Amelia was secretly gathering evidence of his massive embezzlement," Vance explained.
"So he blackmailed Nora into poisoning Amelia with a paralytic drug that mimics death," I realized aloud.
"Exactly," Vance confirmed, handing Lily a warm blanket.
"Nora paid off the coroner, and Marcus locked Amelia away to use her as leverage in case I ever got too close."
I looked at the pistol resting on the metal table, feeling an overwhelming need for vengeance.
"We have to go back and tear that place apart," I declared.
Vance shook his head, looking at his computer monitors.
"Marcus is moving her to his private yacht at the docks tonight to escape federal jurisdiction," Vance warned.
Suddenly, Vance began to cough violently, clutching his throat in obvious distress.
He coughed up a terrifying amount of bright red blood and collapsed onto the concrete floor.
I rushed to his side, completely bewildered by his sudden medical emergency.
I looked up at the warehouse ventilation shaft and saw a strange, sweet-smelling purple smoke pouring into the room.

The heavy steel doors of the safe house suddenly blew open with a deafening explosion.
Nora stepped through the smoke, holding a high-powered rifle equipped with a laser sight.
