Chapter 6 - The Standoff

Dante pushed Amara safely behind his broad frame.

He raised his own weapon, aiming directly through the chemical smoke at Selena.

Selena wiped the foam from her eyes and aimed back.

"Put it down, Dante," Selena sneered.

"Your entire empire is crumbling as we speak."

Dante’s face was an unreadable mask of lethal calm.

"You played me," Dante said, his voice terrifyingly quiet.

"You were easy to play," she mocked.

"You wanted an escape from your perfect little wife, and I gave it to you."

Dante didn't flinch.

"I made a mistake," Dante admitted, his eyes never leaving Selena.

"But nobody threatens my family."

Dante pulled the trigger.

His gun clicked empty.

He had exhausted his ammunition fighting his way into the bunker.

Selena smiled triumphantly and prepared to fire.

Suddenly, Matteo stepped out from a side corridor.

He fired two shots directly into Selena's chest.

She collapsed to the floor, her gun skittering away.

Matteo lowered his weapon, looking at his estranged brother.

"You always were careless, Dante," Matteo said.

Dante stepped forward, shielding Amara again.

"What do you want, Matteo?"

"I want the ledger," Matteo said, aiming his gun at Dante now.

Amara grabbed Dante's arm, pulling him back.

A sudden, agonizing cramp ripped through Amara's abdomen.

She cried out, dropping to her knees on the cold concrete.

Dante immediately fell to his knees beside her, panic replacing the anger in his eyes.

"The baby," Amara gasped, clutching her stomach.

"It's too early."

Matteo watched them, his finger tightening on the trigger.
