Chapter 5 - The True Enemy

Amara instinctively covered her left hand with her right.
She had been so focused on taking the ledger that she hadn't considered her own jewelry.
"How did you find me before Dante did?" Amara asked.
Selena laughed, a sharp, unpleasant sound.
"Dante doesn't have the tracker frequency, Amara."
"I do."
Selena paced around the small room, keeping the gun leveled.
"I’ve been tapping Dante's phones and hacking his security for two years."
Amara frowned in confusion.
"You're not just his mistress."
"Of course not," Selena scoffed.
"I work for the Volkov syndicate."
"Dante was just a naive, arrogant mark who thought he was using me."
Selena held out her free hand.
"Hand over the ledger, and I'll make sure your death is quick."
"If you kill me, Dante will hunt you to the ends of the earth," Amara warned.
"Dante will be dead by morning," Selena replied coldly.
"My men are ambushing his mansion right now."
Amara felt a sudden, unexpected pang of fear for the husband who had broken her heart.
She grabbed the duffel bag and slowly unzipped it.
"Take it," Amara said, pulling the heavy book out.
She tossed the ledger toward the corner of the room.
Selena greedily followed the book with her eyes, stepping away from the door.
Amara seized the opportunity and threw her heavy steel water bottle directly at the fire alarm panel.
Alarms blared instantly, spraying thick white chemical foam from the ceiling.
Selena fired blindly, the bullet grazing Amara's arm.
Amara bolted through the open door into the chaotic, foam-filled hallway.
She ran straight into a solid wall of a man's chest.

Strong arms wrapped around her.
She looked up into Dante’s furious, blood-splattered face.
